The Doctor Who television series was novelised by Target Books starting in 1973 and continued right through to 1991. The Doctor Who books covered almost every television episode over this time.
From 1983 Target began numbering the books in the Doctor Who series. However, because there were already many Doctor Who books published by this time, Target went through and numbered the early books, not by their order of publication but by alphabetical order. Therefore, Doctor Who and the Abominable Snowman became Doctor Who book #1.
